Local Nonprofit Calls Volunteers to Action to Support the Elderly Population of Tarrant County Now thru May 2022

Northside Inter-Community Agency Seeks to Aid 50 Seniors in Need of Minor Home Repairs with the Help of North Texas Do-Gooders

Tarrant County, TX (February 03, 2022) — Northside Inter-Community Agency (NICA) announced today its aim to assist at least 50 Tarrant County Seniors in need of minor home improvements. The organization is calling out to volunteers across North Texas to donate their time and skills to aid this population in great need. This program is made possible by a $20,000 grant awarded by The Carl B. & Florence E. King Foundation. It will bolster NICA’s Good Works Program, which provides services to older adults (65 and older) and people currently on disability, including a supplemental food program, case management, home repair assistance, and financial assistance when available.

The funds will go towards purchasing materials for home repairs; however, this critical work cannot be accomplished without the community’s help. The more than 50-year-old nonprofit has long led with the philosophy that the best way to prevent poverty is by meeting people where they are, aiding and empowering people in need to help themselves, and in turn help their neighbors. Through community care, Fort Worth neighbors can uplift one another – leading to a more beautiful, connected, and vital city.

  • Program Timeline: Now through May 31, 2022
  • Commonly Requested Repairs + Tasks: Leaking shower, broken stairs, caulking needed (toilet, sink, or bathtub), broken sink handle (bathroom or kitchen), broken front door, a leak in the wall, protruding nails on boards (floor or wall), filling holes (floors, ceiling, and walls) among others. 
  • Volunteer Expertise Needed but Not Required: Light electrical to light plumbing is often needed; however, a willingness to learn and help those in need is most important.
  • Partnerships: NICA believes in partnership over competition; church groups and other volunteer organizations are welcome to lend assistance.

The pandemic caused a universal upheaval over the past three years, and many are looking to reconnect with the community in more intentional ways. NICA seeks to foster those connections while doing good for a vulnerable population. All volunteers need to do, is reach out; NICA will pair each volunteer or organization with a senior in need, no matter the volunteers’ skill level. 

When asked about what this program is bringing to the community and why volunteers are so important, the Executive Director of NICA, Connie Nahoolewa, said, “These home improvements will make these living spaces safer and more inhabitable for the elderly residing within them. But, we can’t do it without the support of volunteers who are willing to lend a hand. Volunteers will be giving the gift, not just of time but also of autonomy. These home repairs will allow senior citizens the ability to remain in their homes longer – retaining their independence. We truly believe that together we can form more connected and stronger neighborhoods.”
